1983 Chateau Palmer Wine Review -
Finish it Up Now and Smile!

I normally do not drink Bordeaux wines at my home but I always drink them when I visit my brother's wine cellar. Tonight was no exception as Scott pulled one of his favorite gems from the 1983 vintage. I have had this wine once before, three years ago I would estimate, and the wine was still as enjoyable as I had remembered. However, the wine has definitely peaked and I am not sure how many more years this wine will deliver crisp, clean fruit to the taster.

My recommendation for those who have the 1983 Palmer, classified as a third growth, in your wine cellar is to try a bottle soon and see what your palate recommends. This is a great wine and often overlooked in the wine blogs so if you ever see a bottle on a restaurant wine list, give it a try! My rating 95 pts however in 1997 when Robert parker last tasted this wine, he had the following comments in his Wine Advocate Newsletter:

"One of the superb wines of the vintage, the 1983 Palmer continues to display a saturated purple/garnet color, and an intense perfume of jammy black fruits, smoked meats, flowers, cedar, and Asian spices. Super-concentrated, powerful, and full-bodied, this huge, unctuously textured wine is approaching its plateau of maturity. Because of the high Merlot content it can easily be drunk now, yet promises to last for another 20-25 years. I remain convinced that the 1983 will be the most powerful Palmer since the compelling 1961. Last tasted 9/97"

So, 9 years have past since his last written review...so give it a taste test and see if you agree that this wine has had better days but is still delivering great satisfaction today.
