Battle of the 96 point Heavyweights: 1992 Harlan vs. 1996 MayaYesterday was Connor's 9th Birthday Party and when I returned home with some family members we decided that we did not drink enough wine so we opened a few more bottle, including these two great wines. Having these two wines after a fun Queen Party Concert for Connor at the Children's Cultural Center was a cap to a great day. The nose on the Maya was spectacular and so was the entire experience as we enjoyed the wine. Maya is my favorite of the California Cult Cabernet's and in truth it is a blend, not 100% Cabernet like the Harlan Estate. The 1996 Maya has many great years ahead of itself on it's 10th Birthday. I think this wine can go at least another 10 years without any signs of fatigue. The 1992 Harlan was also spectacular more refined and elegant. The first Harlan made was in 1990. The 1990 Harlan is at its peak right now and has always been a lighter style than the following Harlan vintages. The 1992 unlike it's 1990 cousin is not showing any signs of pre-mature aging and will continue to evolve over the next 5-10 years. Both of these wines are recommended for any serious California red wine collector. Robert Parker in his Wine Advocate Newsletter rated the 1992 Harlan in December of 1994 as follows:
Robert Parker also reviewed the 1996 Maya in the January 2000 Issue of the Wine Advocate as follows: "The 1996 Maya is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Vivid, intense aromas of new saddle leather, plums, black currants, underbrush, and licorice are followed by a full-bodied, sensationally concentrated wine with sweet tannin, a deep, exceptionally pure and concentrated mid-palate, and an opulently-textured finish. It was surprisingly open-knit and delicious when tasted in October, but there is more tannin lurking beneath the surface. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2025" 96 points Dalla Valle Vineyards Brian Pasch - March 27, 2006
