1995 Pahlmeyer "Proprietary Red" is a WOW

Pahlmeyer WineryJason Pahlmeyer, pictured above, has been making wine under his namesake brand since 1986. The wine has evolved over the years and his Proprietary Red has been a brooding monster in my cellar for many years. When I have tasted this wine in the past it has been very good but today this wine exploded with a wonderful nose of cherry, licorice and spice. In a blind tasting you could consider this a French wine which is not surprising because it is a blend of different grape varietals which can include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Malbec.

I have to admit that I stopped purchasing the Proprietary Red in 1997 after mixed reviews of the 1998, 1999 and 2000 vintages. The 1994 - 1997 vintages of the Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red are classics receiving 96,96,95 and 98 points from noted wine reviewer Robert Parker. I agree with parker on this one and give the wine a score of 96 points.

Pahlmeyer Wine ReviewWhat I learned tonight is that Pahlmeyer wines need time to evolve. At 11 years old, the 1995 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red still has another 5-10 years of longevity and enjoyment. This is the best that this wine has "showed" in the glass over eight tastings since 1997. If you have this wine in your cellar, pop a bottle and tell me what you think. This bottle was purchased direct from the winery on release. At auction this wine will trade between $125-$175 per bottle so if you want to give it a try budget accordingly.

Note: The bottle shown on the right is the old style label that was used in vintages 1992 - 1997 that I collected in my wine cellar. There is a new label for the Proprietary Red. I am not sure when it went into production, but it is shown below:
