1997 Lapsus - A Costly Spanish Blend that misses the mark.

Lapsis Wine ReviewAbadia Retuerta introduced a new cuvee in 1997, the "Cuvee Lapsus" which has a retail price of around $135. The wine is made with equal parts Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot and it is the first time I have tasted a wine with this combination of grape varietals. This was heralded to me as a great wine worthy of the cellar so after 5+ years of cellaring I decided to give this a try. The bottom line was the wine was just "OK" and at this price point it is not a great value from Spain.

The wine had the color of a Chianti and it was similarly dry on the pallet. The wine had aromas of cherries and black fruit but the finish was short and uninspiring. The people who tasted the wine said that is was enjoyable but for $135 I would have expected more. Robert parker rated this wine 92 points which I think is close to the mark. I would give the wine 89-90 points.

There is no need to purchase this wine unless the quality of the product significantly improves or the wine sells for under twenty dollars.
