1999 Ojai Vineyard "Thompson Vineyard" Syrah

M y experience with Ojai Vineyard wines is limited; I have collected some of their wines but not every year. As far as Syrah producers in California, Ojai Vineyard is a veteran. Their track record with the wine pundits, like Robert Parker, is very good. In some vintages their Syrah's have eclipsed the magical 95 point barrier. Robert Parker gave this wine 96 points and described it as follows in his Wine Advocate Newsletter:

"The blockbuster 1999 Syrah Thompson Vineyard boasts an opaque black/purple color as well as a bouquet that is the essence of smoky Syrah. Fried bacon intermixed with cassis, barbecue spice, and blackberry aromas are followed by an unctuously-textured, full-bodied, deep, sensationally pure, prodigious Syrah to drink now and over the next 12-15 years. "

My read on this wine was that it well deserved this high score and if my readers can find this wine at auction my recommendation is the BUY IT. This wine was in perfect balance and filled with gorgeous fruit. It could be one of the most enjoyable California Syrah's I have tasted.

To keep this in perspective, I have tasted all the blockbuster "Sine Qua Non" Syrah's they made as well as those from Araujo and Konsgaard. There was something special about this wine; it was NOT over the top like some of the wines from Sine Qua Non. I would recommend my readers search out this wine and add it to their cellar.
