Never underestimate a Montelena Cabernet

I have to admit that in the past 5 years I've not been buying Cabernets from this estate like the old days. I have felt that the luster was off the ball after the 1999 vintage. Tonight I opened the 2000 Montelena Estate Cabernet and it was a delicious bottle of wine that was very enjoyable and ready to drink.

After six years, the wine has perfectly integrated tannins and fruit. Montelena Cabernet vintages 1991 - 1997 need much more time to evolve; six years was never enough to get a Montelena Cabernet to such a balanced state. That could be due to an apparent change in winemaking style that is producing more accessible wines. If you have this wine in your cellar, I would give it a taste very soon.

The winery had some bad press in recent years surrounding "corked" wines being produced in abundance due to a problem in their wine cellar. The cellar was completely evacuated and cleaned and it looks like this problem is now in their past. I have to start tasting their wines again to see how they have been doing with the 2001 and 2002 vintages. If you have any recent Montelena tasting experiences, send me a note.
