Something Completely New -
A treat from my recent Portland trip

Traveling can often be a pain in the ass but occasionally you stumble on a great restaurant and also find a great bottle of wine. My trip to Portland this week included dinner at Red Star Tavern, a restaurant in downtown Portland. This casual and busy bistro had a mouth watery menu and a very reasonably priced wine list. I started the meal with a 2002 Pine Ridge "Dijon Clone" Chardonnay which was heavenly (95/100). With dinner I asked the wine steward to make a suggestion, which was the unknown 2002 Walla Walla Vintners Cabernet Sauvignon. You can get on their mailing list by going to: www.wallawallavintners.com

The 2002 Cabernet was amazingly smooth and in balance; a surprising feat for such a young wine. The Cabernet significant hints of chocolate in the nose and mouth. Everyone who shared the bottle at the table was in agreement; this was a wonderful wine. If you like Washington State red wines, I would take a moment to search out 1-2 bottles before it leaves the market. I would rate the wine 93/100 and I believe it will age gracefully with time over the next 5-7 years.
