2003 Almaviva Cabernet

About a month ago, a local wine merchant sent out an e-mail touting a great wine from Chile. Now I normally do not buy new wines just from an e-mail but something that the retailer aid made me take a closer look. The wine arrived a few weeks ago and I did not try it right away.

Then the latest issue of the Wine Spectator arrived and one of the Highly Recommended Wines was the 2003 Vina Almaviva from Chile. The magazine gave the wine 95 points so I was encouraged to try the wine sooner than later. The wine is made by Concha Y Toro in a joint venture with Baron Philippe de Rothschild

The 2003 Almaviva Cabernet is the finest wine I have had from Chile. I'll go out on a limb and say that this wine should have been scored even higher! There have been a few wines that have impressed me from Chile but all had a distinctly different nose and taste profile. This wine in a blind tasting could be taken for a California Cabernet or even a Bordeaux blend. The wine had ample fruit but not over-done like some wines from Australia. The tannins were in perfect balance and the wine was very satisfying.

The wine is primarily made of Cabernet but uses typical Bordeaux blending grapes to craft the final blend. Check out the links provided for the Almaviva Cabernet page on the winery website to read more about the wine. I recommend this wine whole-heartedly but you should seek out this wine before it disappears from the market. The 2003 Almaviva Cabernet was made by winemaker Tod Víctor Mostero, shown at right.
