2004 Amnesia Zinfandel -
The First Real Purchase of Zinfandel in 5 years!

Amnesia Zinfandel - MX WinesI used to purchase cases upon cases of Zinfandel each year back in the late 90's. Names like Turley, Ridge, Martinelli, St. Francis, Rafanelli and many great producers of Zinfandel graced my cellar walls. Then, I discovered that Zinfandel has a short lifespan in the cellar and if I didn't drink the quickly they went bad. I also found odd aging behaviors which differed with each producer so I could never really tell when the wines hit their peak.

So I cut down on Zinfandel purchases and switched to Syrah based wines. I have found that if you like fruit bombs like some Zinfandels can be, you can find similar joy in Australian Shiraz with the added bonus that many Shiraz wines can age 2-3 times longer than California Zinfandels.

When I learned about a new wine project from Margeaux Singleton, I wrote a story back in March telling my readers to get on her mailing lists. The first release from her new project arrived last week and I quickly opened a bottle of the 2004 Amnesia Zinfandel after it had settled down in the cellar for a few days. I did not know what to expect and this was the first time I bought a six-pack of a California Zinfandel in many years.

The wine is labeled at 16.2% alcohol but it did not taste like a high alcohol fruit bomb. This wine was a wonderfully balanced Zinfandel with great fruit and elegance. There were no hard edges on this wine. The wine is produced from 24 year old dry farmed vines at the H and L Vineyard in St. Helena. There are only 75 cases of the 2004 vintage so finding this gem may be a hard task. However, if you read the March article, you will get a big hint where to find some and also you can visit the website for additional retail outlets.

In a few months they will be releasing there first Cabernet and I anxiously await this wine which if it has the pedigree of the 2004 Amnesia Zinfandel, it should be a smashing success.
