2004 Dalla Valle Cabernets![]() Dalla Valle Winery makes one of my favorite California red wines; Maya. With wine prices skyrocketing, having a bottle of Maya on a regular basis is not cost effective. However, Dalla Valle makes two Cabernet wines that are more affordable, but still pricey. I recently tasted both the 2004 Dalla Valle Napa cabernet as well as the 2004 Casa Dalla Valle Cabernet. The later was a new experience for me and a very pleasant surprise indeed. I had the 2004 Dalla Valle Cabernet along side the 2005 Scarecrow Cabernet and the 2004 Maiden Cabernet. The following day I opened the 2004 Casa Dalla Valle bottling which was offered to me on the mailing list. The odd thing is that I don't remember too much about the wine and it is not listed on the Dalla Valle Website. I think this is the first year it was offered on their mailing list. The Casa Dalla Valle retails for around $60 and the Napa Cabernet retails for around $125.00. The "casa" bottling was excellent and was drinking much better than the Napa Cabernet was the day before. The fruit and integration of tannins was a powerfully smooth experience in the glass. It was very exciting to drink. It rated the 2004 Casa Dalla Valle 95 points (BP-95) and the regular 2004 Dalla Valle Napa Cabernet 92 points. (BP-92). I rated the normal cabernet lower because I found the wine to have a touch more tannins showing than I normally like. The Dalla Valle was the top pick one of in the people in our group and the wine did have many fans. Over time, the score may increase if it ages was well as the 2000 Dalla Valle Napa Cabernet (BP-94) did when we tasted it on the same day. The mailing list for Dalla Valle is closed for all intentional purposes but you can add your name to the list and wait. www.dallavallevineyards.com Brian Pasch - May 10, 2008
