2004 Maybach Family Vineyards - Materium Cabernet

2004 Mayback Materium Cabernet OakvilleSo its a few weeks before the 2004 Maybach Materium is released and I have at least 3 bottles reserved of this inaugural release. From all channel checks in California this wine should be a very special red crafted by winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. Thomas consults for a few wineries in California that include: Outpost Winery, Chiarello Winery, Schrader Cellars, Tamber Bay Winery and Nicholson Ranch Winery.

The wine has a release price of $110 dollars a bottle; an aggressive first step for a new winery but one that seems to be working of late. As I mentioned earlier, the 2004 vintage seems ripe with new names and great wines including Keever Cabernet and Coup De Foudre. I spoke with John Rittmaster at Prima Wines in California and he is also anxiously awaiting a few bottles from Maybach Family Vineyards. John knows winemaker Thomas Brown but there has not been a lot of details about the project that he could share with me.

According to the Maybach Family Vineyards website, this is what we know about the production of the 2004 Maybach Materium:

  • 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 45 cases produced
  • 80% new French oak
  • 14.8% alc.

The 2004 Maybach Materium is crafted from a single block of the Weitz Vineyard. The vineyard sits at 1000 feet elevation on the eastern hillside of Oakville. The shallow soil is filled with boulders and stones which give deep fruit concentration to the vines. As is all pre-release notifications that i give on my website, I will provide tasting notes as soon as the wine is received.

Buying Maybach Materium

You never know about a new wine until you taste it and see if its made in a style that you enjoy. The hype surrounding new California wines can at times by tiresome. In the case of Maybach Materium, there are many insiders who think this is going to be a great Oakville project. So, get on their mailing list and buy your full allocation of THREE BOTTLES.

It's better to have something than no 2004 Maybach at all! tasting notes will be coming shortly.
