2005 Buccella Cabernet
I tasted this wine with two other friends and we all came to the same conclusion that the 2005 is not a close family member of the 2004 Buccella. Is this the red-headed step child? Something is very different with this wine. It is not that wine wine was corked or damaged. The fruit in the 2005 vintage has very dark, brooding and a bit sharp in the tongue. The finish was a bit dry and tart. At first, I was optimistic that the wine just need some aeration. However, the wine's character persisted and gave my palette a sharp bite that is just the opposite reaction that the 2004 fruit gave upon first taste. I allowed the open bottle to aerate over night and the nose came around but the fruit taste was still the same. If the winemaker and fruit sources are the same from 2004, then the growing season made a big change in this wine. I can not recommend the wine at this point since it displays no appealing characteristics right now other than a nice nose. I will re-taste the wine in 6 months and post a follow-up review. If you would like to get on the mailing list for Buccella, which I recommend, please fill out the form below for a VIP introduction. Brian Pasch -April 5, 2008
