2005 Keever CabernetI recently received an email from Olga Keever addressing my questions about the 2005 Keever Cabernet. When I visited the Keever property in August of 2007 and commented how much I enjoyed the 2005 Cabernet, I wanted to to get some more background on the vintage. If you remember I loved the 2004 Keever Cabernet and the 2005 continues the fine tradition at Keever Vineyards. The aromatics on the 2005 are seductive and the wine was silky smooth for such a youthful wine. This is a cellar keeper but be advised supplies are limited so get the wine on pre-release immediately. I rate the 2005 Keever Cabernet Sauvignon 95/100 points and a fantastic wine that should be in all collectors cellars. The way that the wine is structured, I would be confident that a majority of tasters would enjoy this at a meal. There are no hard edges and the wine just sings in the glass. As approachable as the 2005 Keever Cabernet is today, I would give the wine a few more years of aging to really appreciate the beauty of this wine. The winemaker behind the Keever "magic" is Celia Masyczek who is also the winemaker at Scarecrow. So here is what Olga Keever had to say about the 2005 vintage: I have been hearing two great things about the '05 vintage. One is that the harvest was unexpectedly huge with excellent quality and the other is that it's being compared to the 1997 vintage! Talk about all the stars aligning! I believe you are right about the source of the "conventional wisdom" (local vintners!). For us, it was also an unexpectedly huge vintage, in general, but it was also our biggest harvest because our second planting of vineyard blocks came into full production in '05. We planted 1 & 1/2 acres in 2000 (year old vines) and the next 3 & 1/2 acres in 2002. The first planting was of two Cab Sauvignon clones, 3 and 337. The second planting was of two new (to the Napa Valley) French Entav clones, 191 and 341. These are flavor bombs but, in some places, they are susceptible to a virus. Apparently, in our place, they are not! To make a long story longer, our '05 is much different from our '04 because the two new clones now make up more than half of our fruit. The good news is that the ’05 is fabulous. We are pouring the '05 in the tasting room and selling futures because we have no more '04. Even though the '05 has only been in the bottle for 4 months, it is already very smooth with great aromas and wonderful flavors. The best news is that it is only going to get better! Our ’05 harvest took place on one day. That was already unusual but with the humongous crop, it was pretty stressful. I was down in the lower blocks with the pickers and Bill was up top with the ranch manager, where the blocks had already been picked. The foreman I was with called up top to request more macro bins because the pickers had nearly filled the bins that had been provided. The ranch manager said “What do you mean you need more #@&*!$ bins?! You have plenty of #@&*!$ bins!” The foreman insisted that we needed more bins and the ranch manager said “You’re crazy, I’m coming down there to see for myself!” There were some more expletives tossed about and the ranch manager and Bill came down to see what was going on. The ranch manager flipped out. “#@&*!$, you need more bins!” Frantic calls went back and forth and after a bit, we had a new truck load of bins. This was typical of the ’05 crush. All over the valley, you hear people yelling “We need more tanks!” “We need more barrels!” “We need more … submitted by Olga Keever Brian Pasch - September 27, 2007
