NY Italian Restaurant - Reflections on a Great Meal

I recently had the pleasure to dine at Fresco by Scotto, an extraordinary Italian restaurant located on 34 East 52nd Street between Madison and Park Avenues. This was my first time at this outstanding New York City destination although Fresco by Scotto has been attracting celebrities and savvy New Yorkers since 1983. The photo gallery of stars, politicians and sport figures that line their walls is the "who's who" of popular culture. The wine pairings with their modern Tuscan cuisine were fantastic. Their Italian wine list is one of the best in Manhattan and fairly priced. The service was attentive as their well informed wait staff delivered one savory dish after another. Restaurant manager Brent Dill guided me through his favorites on the wine list and introduced me to a new Napa California superstar called Buccella. We tasted the 2002 Cabernet and the wine was dark, extracted and well balanced. It reminded me of a young Colgin or even an Araujo Cabernet. I recommend serious California collectors to get on their mailing list ASAP, Parker has given the 2003 Cabernet a score of  95 points.

The wine list at Fresco by Scotto had many surprising values and numerous vintage Italian wines. I ordered a magnificent 1990 Tenuta Carpazo Las Casa Brunello di Montalcino, which was drinking perfectly, and a bargain at under $200 per bottle. Rarely can you find 16 year old Brunello's in New York City that are stored in pristine condition. This was just one gem on their list, the others I will keep to myself as I plan to drink some of the rarest Italian wines I have ever located in a New York restaurant. If you love good Italian food and a fantastic wine list of current and vintage wines, contact Fresco by Scotto at 212-935-3434 for reservations. It was an added bonus to meet one of the owners Anthony Marion Scotto Jr. who also shared my passion for wine. This restaurant is firing on all cylinders; don't miss this Tuscan destination in the heart of Manhattan.
