2004 Ghost Block Cabernet - OakvilleTonight I opened a bottle of 2004 Ghost Block Oakville Cabernet for the first time. It was another stellar recommendation from John Rittmaster at Prima Vini in California. The wine was very unique in that it did not follow any recognized pattern of new California producers. The wine has a slight cotton candy edge, very sweet fruit and a wonderful balance. When I tried to find out more about the wine I almost came up blank. Thanks to my perseverance I discovered that the wine was made by Andy Hoxsey and is distributed through the Napa Valley Wine Company for $55 a bottle. Here is what the NVWC website had to say about this wine: Nestled on a gently sloping knoll, Ghost Block vineyard is named in honor of Napa's pioneer winemakers who rest in a tiny 150 year old cemetery on the north edge of Yountville - the epicenter of Napa Valley. Graced with perfect drainage and sunny exposure, Ghost Block Vineyard is a jewel, an heirloom, passed down through a single family for over 100 years. Coveted by celebrity winemakers, the fruit from this and nearby vineyards has been the cornerstone of many of Napa's "Cult Wines". The secret is out. Ghost Block is a winery that specializes in Cabernets from Yountville and Oakville, all of our vineyards are family owned and organically certified. Production is very limited, always based on our very best fruit. We grow incredible cabernet. We do not purchase grapes - rather we take great pride in the fact that ALL Ghost Block wines are family owned and grown. Ghost Block is the culmination of our family's 100 year history in the Napa Valley. We have been growing cabernet for generations; Ghost Block is our personal expression of our vineyards best, made with quiet pride. Pour a glass; the story begins........... The wine is actually very good..almost like a Colgin Herb Lamb Cabernet. I rate it 94 points and a cellar recommendation. The wine has a very nice nose, mouth feel and balance. It is on the lighter side of recent new releases I've tasted from Oakville but this is by no means a knock. It promises to evolve into a better wine since the balance of fruit and tannins are in place. I would search out a few bottles at Prima Vini and taste one immediately....it was a real pleasure to taste this wine. I look forward to re-tasting it in another year and I expect it to rate higher.
