Great Wine Experiences in Italy

Montalcino Wine StoreThis year was no exception: More great discoveries from my trip to Italy. The photo to the right shows a few of these new finds, and yes, that is a Rose! Many of you will be familiar with the great wine house "Biondi Santi", who created the Brunello di Montalcino wine classification. Well, this year my good friend Tullio Scrivani from Osticcio in Montalcino tasted me on this wonderful Rose, which is the bottle on the far right side of the photo. Quick Fact: There are no bottles of Rose currently in my cellar.

I purchased a case after tasting this wine so it had to be something special. The story is that the founding father of Biondi Santi made this wine for himself. The 2004 Biondi Santi Rosato di Toscano is his everyday wine! Tullio was able to get a few cases to sell. This will be consumed this summer, with a nice chill, and believe me, it was refreshing. Interested in being one of the few Americans to taste this wine? www.osticcio.com

Montalcino Wine StoreOf the 2001 Brunello's that I tasted on my first day in Montalcino, the surprising winner was the Silvio Nardi 2001 Brunello. This wine is well priced and was very well balanced; wonderful in the nose and in the mouth. I have written previously about the 2001 Brunello's from Siro Pacenti and Casanova di Neri, which are outstanding, but this wine was also a great wine. Look for this wine on fine retailers shelves' now and taste a bottle for yourselves.

The best new find on this trip was tasting wines from Tenuta di Trinoro; which makes three wines ranging from inexpensive to high priced. I was very fortunate to taste the 2000 "Le Cupole" which is their mid-range wine and it was perfection. I bought every bottle that was left in Tullio's store. The current vintage of "Le Cupole" is 2003 which was included in the mixed tasting case offered to my readers. Their top of the line merlot was out of this world, it is called "Tenuta di Trinoro" and is the left bottle in the photo above. I have written about this wine separately, and you can read this article on this link.

I strongly recommend that readers find wines produced by Tenuta di Trinoro and taste them.
