My Kitchen Witch Conjures a Mixed ExperienceI wanted to end the year on a strong note so I headed out to Monmouth Beach with some friends for breakfast. The destination was "My Kitchen Witch Cafe" (www.mykitchenwitch.com) in the center of this small downtown area. I had eaten in the cafe before with pleasing results but this recent experience will keep me away for some time. Oddly enough for a breakfast destination, the chef only cooks scrambled eggs so any other variation is off the menu. We ordered our drinks and two juices never arrived but were put on the bill. I ordered a muffin, and after two reminders and 15 minutes of waiting, the muffin arrived. It looked nice but it was cool, dry and slightly stale; not the freshly baked experience I was looking for on a weekend. The pancakes came and the children shrieked; stating that the pancakes were the ugliest that they had ever seen. However, the pancakes did taste very good, although they were not shaped like a normal pancakes and seems to be cooked in a frying pan. I ordered a broccoli and cheese omelet. The broccoli was burnt black in areas that were exposed to the frying pan. The visual presentation again was awful but the taste was acceptable. The omelet came with two biscuits, once was not fully cooked and the other was done perfectly. My friends ordered scrambled eggs and Taylor Ham, and one set was completely burnt while the second plate was just fine. The summary is that quality control and visual appeal ranks low in this eatery. The quality variance just in our order was unacceptable. At the end of the meal, the bill for $88 covering six adults and three children was not out of line but we would have been better served at a Red Bank diner where the food quality and presentation is always consistent. A boutique eatery should pay better attention to service, presentation and client expectations. This is not one my top local destinations for breakfast any longer. I would caution readers to try other local eateries before this one until they can get their act together. For alternatives, try the local hang-out: Steve's Luncheonette located in Sea Bright.
