Mollydooker Velvet Glove Shiraz
Robert Parker's world famous 100 point rated scale, is used as a benchmark for wines sold at auction houses. You will see his scoring system referenced on wine retail sites, auction house booklets and wine blogs. The Parker "holy grail" for winemakers is the rarely awarded 100 point score. With a score of 97 points or higher, a wine price can double, triple or even quadruple overnight. In the October 31, 2007 issues of the Wine Advocate newsletter, Mr. Parker awarded the 2006 Velvet Glove Shiraz a near perfect score of 99 out of 100 points. This is the fifth time the winemaking team of Sarah and Sparky Marquis have been awarded a 99 point score. Their second most powerful Shiraz called "Carnival of Love" was awarded a score of 97 points in the same issue. When I first met Sarah Marquis in 2003, she was wearing her "crown" from their regional Australian wine competition. It was the symbol of their winemaker of the year status. I fell in love with Sarah immediately. Anyone who would come to a US wine tasting with a traditional crown on her head had to be fun to be around. Since then, I have followed the career of Sarah and Sparky Marquis with awe. Both of them are taken back by the success and the scores granted to their wines. I have coordinated many wine dinners with the Marquis family in the USA and they are always humbled by the praise of their fans and the wine press. Their true passion for wine comes out in all that they do and say; a refreshing change from the corporate wine machines we see around the world. The term Mollydooker is an Australian slang version of the American "South Paw" phrase; both Sarah and Sparky are left-handers. Their wine names and packaging are as unique as their personalities. It makes me happy to see two hands on farmers get world wide acclaim for their hard work. Their example makes me want to achieve all of my dreams.
