2006 Mollydooker Velvet Glove Shiraz
No one seems to deny that their entry level wines at $20 a bottle are some of the best values on the wine market. But when the 2006 Velvet Glove is mentioned, the waters divide into two camps. One camp realizes that their top wines in the past called Integrity soared to over $200 per bottle overnight when Parker gave them 99 point scores. This camp also recognizes that wines like Grange or Chris Rockland's premium shiraz bottles sell for over $300 a bottle so why the fuss? the other side thinks that Australian winemakers are charging too much for their top wines and are opportunists. They think the $20 juice is priced perfectly and that anything over $80 a bottle isn't worth the price. this side is quick to point out that just a few years ago there were very few Shiraz wines over $100 a bottle and now their are dozens in the upper stratosphere. The Market Sets wine PricesIn reality, the market sets the price for all goods and services. The wine has mostly been presold so you will most probably never see the Velvet Glove on a retail wine store unless they are a very fine wine shop that specializes in cult wines from Australia. I have tasted the wine and was amazed at its balance, purity and overall structure. It was stunning and I would place the 2006 Velvet Glove Shiraz in the very top wines I have tasted from Australia. I think the price is fair and would not be surprised if you see the wine selling on the gray market for over $250 a bottle this Fall. If the 2006 Velvet Glove is over priced, the market will send a signal and the wine will not sell. Having been involved with the winery team and knowing the tremendous costs involved in making and marketing wines, I think their portfolio is well balanced. The 2006 Mollydooker portfolio has five wines priced at $20, three wines at $50, two wines at $80 and the velvet Glove at $175. I score the Velvet Glove 99+ points and I suggest you place an order before the Wine Advocate newsletter comes out this Fall. I don't know if Robert Parker's team will like the wine but since I have tasted the Integrity many times that scored 99 points, I think the Velvet Glove is a notch above the Integrity. You can go to www.mollydookerwines.com to see if there is any Velvet Glove available for purchase. Brian Pasch - June 27, 2007
