Oregon Wine Travels - Is there Great Wine in Oregon?

I'm visiting Oregon this week and staying in a cool town called Bend. The town is hip and the downtown shopping area is filled with unique boutiques, restaurants and wine bars. Bend is a popular ski town supporting Mount Hood and Mount Bachelor.

Yesterday I had two meals at Bend's most popular wine bar & restaurant called Merenda. The restaurant has a large wine by the glass program as well as a wonderful wine list. Merenda offers tasting flights of white and red wines, four glass per flight with a 2 oz pour. The food and atmosphere was great; highly recommended.

Archery Summit Winery - Brian PaschFrom tasting about a dozen wines there were two Pinot Noirs that stood out among the pack:

  • 2003 Archery Summit Pinot - Arcus Estate
  • 2005 O'Reilly's Pinot - Willamette Valley

These wines are readily available on the market so you may want to seek them out and and give them a try yourself.

I was not impressed with the Syrah's from Oregon. Most I tasted were thin and lacking the fruit concentration to hold up to the ample oak used in the aging process. So, caution on the Syrah's and experiment with the Oregon Pinot's and Cabernet's.
