Rumson Crew Background

Rumson Recreation has started a new program for high school age girls and boys who would like to have the opportunity to participate in a rowing program. After the initial meeting in September, 50 high school students have expressed an interest in this program. A steering committee of parents has been formed and a fundraising committee and public relation committees are now active.

Rumson Crew will offer a winter conditioning program and begin on-the-water training and competitive scholastic rowing in the spring. It is anticipated that other recreational rowing programs will be underway in the summer of 2007.

Rowing is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. There are fifty-seven Scholastic programs in New Jersey alone, and over 100 colleges in the U. S. have crews. With the arrival of the United States Rowing Association in Princeton, and an Olympic Training Center in Mercer County, New Jersey has become the center of rowing in America. In the 2004 Athens Olympics, the U.S. Men’s Eight won the first Gold since the 1964 games in Tokyo. The U.S. Women followed with a Silver Medal win. Their success along with NCAA Title IX, has helped to fuel the growth, and the excitement for rowing: America’s first and oldest college sport.

Rumson Recreation, led by Mr. John Hird, has offered some initial start-up funding on a match basis with Rumson Crew’s funding effort. Checks should be made payable to the Rumson Endowment Fund, a 501c3 organization. Mr. Hird has committed to matching the first $27,000 raised to kick off the Rumson Crew program. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a great new athletic program that will give local children a great sporting experience. Through this appeal and the kick-off fundraiser to be held on January 12, 2006 Dan Edwards and his committee how to raise the full $27,000 for maximizing the matching funds offer. Can you help? See the links below for donations forms and estimated startup costs.

There are many ways to help with the fundraising drive, but here are a few:

  • Write a check directly to the Rumson Endowment Fund for any amount; big or small. Please make sure you mark it for the Rumson Crew program. Click here to get a Rumson Crew Donation Form to print and mail directly. Consider a larger donation and have a boat named after your family, company or a person to be remembered.

  • Review the full list of equipment needed and pricing levels by clicking here: Initial Startup Costs. Consider underwriting a piece of equipment; the most needed are the six Concept-2 training machines for January launch.

  • Attend the fundraiser on January 12, 2007 at the home of Brian and Denise Pasch. If you would like to attend the Rumson Crew kickoff fundraiser, tickets are $150 per person, check will be made out to the Rumson Endowment Fund. RSVP is required. Click here for the sign-up form for tickets.

Please pass the word and send the link t o this page to local friends who would like to see a rowing program started on the Navesink River.
