Goldschlager Move Over - A new flake is in town

Labor Day was celebrated with some friends and many great bottles of wine. The most unique was a wine from Hundred Acres which is called Gold; the 24K gold flakes in the wine bottle remind me of the marketing gimmick from Goldschlager, a spicy cinnamon liquor. At first I did not take the wine seriously but upon tasting it I was pleasantly surprised!

The wine called "Gold" sees no oak in the fermentation process so people who get stuffy noses from high tannin levels will find this wine non-allergenic. The wine is a blend of 70% chardonnay with 30% viognier and gewürztraminer. The wine has a very nice floral nose, a soft and sweet taste on the palate and it was very enjoyable for a summer starter. The wine can be enjoyed on its own or it would be a nice compliment to Foie Gras instead of a Sauterne.

The wine is priced at around $25 a bottle which I think is a fair price for this attractively packaged wine. This would make a great gift idea for someone who enjoys white wines or someone who says that white wines have too much oak for their liking. I give "Gold" a bronze medal with 91 pts and an A+ for packaging.

Other wines tasted on Labor Day and my scores were:

The only specific notes that I would like to share is that the Beringer Merlot and The Mondavi Reserve Cabernet have started their fade. If you have any of these two in your cellar I would drink them up quickly. The Mondavi was the lightest of the two showing the beginnings of the wine breaking down in the glass in both color and clarity. My experience with the Mondavi Reserve wines of the 90's is that you should drink them in the first 7-10 years of their life.

My rule of thumb is that most California red wines should be consumed before they reach 10 years of age. Of course there are some exceptions so if you plan to keep California red wines over 10 years, make sure you are sampling them every other year to insure that you don't let good wines go over the hill.
