Torbreck vs. Sine Qua Non Tasting

It has taken me four days to get around to writing about this tasting. The night on paper looked like a nice opportunity to see the portfolio of two great producers; one from California (Sine Qua Non) and one from Australia (Torbreck).

The wines from Torbreck were from vintages 1998 through 2003 and represented wines that scored over 94 points on the Robert Parker scale. The Sin Qua Non wines were also top scoring wines, most in the 95+ point range and the oldest vintage was the 1995 "The Other Hand" with the remaining wines up to the current release of "For The Love of It" which Parker gave 100 points.

A few overall thoughts:

1. Never do a whole night of Syrah. The wines were paired with a five course tasting menu but after the third course, the wines were just too much. Too much alcohol, too much forward fruit and too much sugar. The wines were very hard to distinguish as the night progressed.

2. These wines need 10+ years to start to evolve. The wines were way too young to really appreciate their terroir and their individual characteristics. The wines from Torbreck and Sine Qua Non do not have a long track record on aging but I would err on holding them 10+ years rather then experience this "Blow Your Head Off" style of tasting when they are 1-6 years old.

3. Tasting 15+ young Syrah's will generate a Big Headache. I'm not sure if it the tannin levels, the alcohol levels or the combination of alcohol and sugar levels but this tasting gave many people a morning hang-over. Be forewarned that a night of 100% Syrah's is not for the weak of heart.

Final Thoughts

So, the wines this night showed poorly in my overall opinion due to their young age and also the style in which they are made. I normally have no problem drinking wines young but these two producers require significant aging to really appreciate what is in the bottle. Hold onto your big Aussie wines and let them mature, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
