2001 Trefethen Napa Cabernet
So I decided to stop by the winery on this February trip to see if there was a more recent version available for sale. Unfortunately, I was informed that the reserve chardonnay would not be released for a few months. So, not to let an opportunity pass us by we all sat down to taste five currently releases and one library release from Trefethen. I won’t bore you with the wines that didn’t make the cut but two wines were outstanding were the 2001 Trefethen Library Release Cabernet and the 2004 Trefethen Cabernet. The woman who conducted our tasting explained that “Library Release” meant that they held the wine in the cellar for a 3 years and thus charged you more for the experience on the delayed release. So, their current release is the 2004 and for a slight premium could you purchase the 2001 cabernet. The 2001 was ready to drive and will have a good 6 years of vibrant aging ahead while the 2004 was enjoyable today but
could use some more time. The 2001 demonstrated how much better a few years of aging can improve a Trefethen Cabernet.
I rate the 2001 Trefethen Cabernet
92 points and the 2004 Trefethen Cabernet
91 points. Brian Pasch -February 19, 2008
