1999 Wild Witch Shiraz - Bewitching

Trevor Jones Wild Witch ShirazIt's Halloween night and I decide to enjoy a bottle of Shiraz. What better bottle to taste than the 1999 Trevor Jones "Wild Witch" Shiraz. This is the second time I have tasted this specific bottling; the first was the 1998 vintage.

I thoroughly enjoyed this wine. Wild Witch Shiraz has a nice balance of fruit and structure, one of the best wines I have tasted from the 1999 vintage. The extra heavy bottle and unique bottle design makes this wine stand out on the shelf. I'm surprised that more people are not talking about this wine.  It rate the wine 94 pts.

Here are some notes from the Michael Skurnick wines, their distributor in New jersey:

"Individual parcels of Shiraz from an old vineyard are the crown of the Barossa wine industry. Wild Witch vineyard, nestled in the Lyndoch Hills is one of these rare gems. Planted and tended by the same family for many generations, it has captured my imagination. The concentrated spicy peppery aromas of this dry grown Shiraz tamed after two and a half years in French Nevers and American oak are full bodied voluptuous and opulent. "

Trevor Jones began his winemaking career in 1977 at Bernkastel Wines, with Rob O'Callaghan, working through two vintages, before accepting a position as assistant winemaker at Karrawirra Wines in 1979. In 1982 Trevor was appointed winemaker and remained in that position until 1986. During Trevor's time at Karrawirra he also made wines for Kellermeister Wines.

At the end of 1986 Trevor moved to the Upper Hunter Valley, in NSW, to take up employment as winemaker for Tyrrell's Vineyards at their Glenbawn Estate Winery. In 1989 he returned to the Barossa Valley as full time winemaker for Kellermeister Wines.

During his time at Kellermeister Wines, Trevor also worked as a consultant winemaker for both Anglesey Wines and Glenara Wines, the latter he is still involved with. Trevor was also employed by St. Hallett Wines as a contract winemaker during eight vintage seasons.
