2001 Brunello from Giacomo Neri is ExcellentThis summer I had the honor of having dinner at the home of Giacomo Neri. His wife prepared a wonderful meal of traditional Tuscan dishes to complement the wines that were served from Giacomo's cellar. The stellar wine of the night was the pre-release tasting of the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino - Tenuta Nuova. This wine will be release in March of 2006 in the US. I have been enjoying Brunello wines for 15 years and I can't remember ever tasting a young Brunello with so much elegance. In my wine tasting circles, being a Brunello advocate, does not win me many fans. People who do not enjoy Italian wines find them too dry, tart or 'thin on the palate". I find them amazingly comforting and satisfying. In the end, the Bordeaux lovers who don't like Italian wines, are doing me a favor. They make it much easier for me to find and purchase great Italian wines without price escalation. The 2001 Casanova Di Neri "Tenuta Nuova" Brunello di Montalcino may be a historic transitional wine for those who like a more fruit forward wine; like a California Cabernet. In the 2001 vintage Giacomo decided to let the wine ferment on the lees much longer than traditionally done for Brunellos. The result is a deep, dark, concentrated wine that filled my mouth with great flavors and no harsh tannins. This is a heads up before the press review the wine. Talk to your retailer and put in your orders in advance. This will be a classic wine to enjoy now and to age for 10+ years! Brian Pasch - September 13, 2005
