Undici Restaurant Review - Rumson New Jersey
I had the opportunity to visit Undici on November 18, 2007 and my primary goal was to see what so many people were telling me: "Undici Restaurant is a nice place but the food is too expensive". When you first arrive you are immediately taken back by the cozy Italian design and chic architecture of the restaurant. The investment to renovate the former Hook, Line and Sinker Restaurant has to be well over a million dollars. The waiting area has a fireplace to keep winter guests warm and overall, I give the restaurant high marks for design, lighting and overall style. What an amazing transformation from its former design. The pressing question at hand is whether the Undici experience is "expensive". Of course that depends on your budget and bank account so instead of making a judgment for everyone, I will tell you what we ordered at my table and the final bill. Dinner at Undici RestaurantI took my son Connor and his friend to dinner on November 18, 2007. We started off with a Margarita Pizza as a shared appetizer. The pizza was larger than a personal pizza but smaller than a traditional large pie. The pizza has hot, tasty and a very nice way to start a meal with two 10 year old boys. The boys had soft drinks and I had an ice tea with my meal. I looked over the wine list for something interesting on the "wine by the glass" menu but I really didn't get excited by any of the wines on the list. My guess is that Undici's wine by the glass program specializes in little know wines that can offer guests a chance at tasting new wine producers. My only issue with that approach is that their wine by the glass program needs to include some "name brand" wines like Rufino, Santa Margarita, Banfi, etc to capture those diners who stick with a known brand. For dinner, I had a fresh pasta dish with meat sauce, Connor had a steak and his friend had a seafood soup which included shrimps, clams, scallops and whitefish. I also ordered a side plate of escarole. The boys enjoyed their food very much. I enjoyed the presentation and flavor of my pasta dish however the pasta was a bit overdone. The service was attentive and the wait staff was very pleasant and accommodating. Toward the end of our meal I ordered a chicken dish "to go" to bring home to Denise. We decided not to have any dessert so we asked for the bill. For the three of us and one takeout chicken dish, with no alcohol, our bill came to $182.98. If you add a 20% tip the final bill, your Undici dining experience would cost you $220 dollars. So, you decide if $220 is fair or expensive for four dinners, no dessert or alcohol. If I was not with two young boys and decided to have wine or drinks with two adult friends, the bill would most probably be closer to $300.
